I have always been inspired by the beauty and wonders of nature.  Beginning with pencil drawings as a child, my love for nature expressed as art unfolded. I took my first watercolor class in 1986, and have continued to enjoy the versatility of this medium.  The way light strikes an object, the pattern of cast shadows, and reflected light make a subject intriguing.  The transparency of watercolor allows me to express these subtleties in a painting.

I earned a BS and an MS in biology at Emporia State University, and taught biology for fourteen years.  Working as a park ranger naturalist for many summers, the beauty of Yellowstone inspired me to return to painting.  I have studied with several outstanding watercolor painters, exhibited work in national shows, and received many awards, including several conservations stamps. I carry a small watercolor box and sketchbook when traveling, as well as a digital camera.  I like to do watercolor studies on location and use this information along with photo references for studio paintings.
